We're off ...

We're packed. The kids are sleeping in their traveling clothes. The carry-on bag is stuffed with food, toys, and -- if all else fails -- a large bottle of Benadryl. Are we ready? That's a little harder to say.

We've had a great farewell tour, lots of relaxing time with our families and plenty of help with the kids, the last minute errands, and with keeping us focused and calm.

Tommy says he is looking forward to the heated toilet seat in our apartment. John can't wait to eat with chopsticks, and Betsy ... well, Betsy just can't wait to eat. She's going to do well over there. I'm looking forward to cheap massages and new adventures in cooking chicken.

But most of all, we're looking forward to the ways this will strengthen and challenge our family, and how it will change us in ways we can't even imagine yet. This will be the craziest thing we've ever done, but we hope to live through it in a way that -- when it's all over -- we can look back and remember how much fun we had, all the cool experiences, and all the things we learned.

So, we're off. Next stop, Shanghai.
