I really did want the whole local school thing to work out. But, in the end, it just wasn't a good fit, though the experience of being in that school and definitely being out of his comfort zone is probably one that will help him in the long run. He had fun with his friends and loved his teachers, and when it came time to actually say goodbye, my heart broke for him a little bit. Goodbyes here seem very final, in a way they never did in Austin. He really won't see those boys and girls again, or do exercises in the schoolyard in the morning, after the Chinese national anthem.
So, when John's teacher gave me a CD of pictures she'd taken over the semester, I cried and thanked her. They will mean so much to him later on, when this whole year and a half is just a blur of memories.
